Leading Projects in Strategy - Speaker will share his consultant experience in IBM and Deloitte, why the nuances of strategy projects require particular agility, and how to thrive as a project manager.  Speaker will outline how to think about complex problem-solving and articulate competitive strategy.

speaker-ash-mike.jpgMike Ash is the director for market development at the Center for Technology and Management Education at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech CTME). He has over twenty-five years of experience advising international organizations on technology innovation and leadership in commercial and not-for-profit sectors.

At Caltech CTME, Mike is responsible for fostering relationships with client companies across science and technology sectors, such as aerospace, biopharma, chemical, and electronics. He launched CTME’s new offerings in professional and executive education, as well as catalyze a network of new strategic alliances in biotech, cybersecurity, and defense to extend the Institute’s value. While collaborating on the design of client learning programs and immersive experiences, Mike marshals the possibilities of Caltech’s thinkers and instructors to create impact for client organizations.

Before joining Caltech, Mike helped to establish technology ethics think tank focused on policy for emerging issues in artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and environmental sustainability. He held leadership positions in the strategy consulting practices of Deloitte, Monitor Group, IBM, and PwC, where he was responsible for advising senior leadership from Intel, Cisco, PBS, Sony Electronics, and Walt Disney. For his clients, Mike led project teams to commercialize technology, launch products, and transform business models.

In IBM and Deloitte, Mike spearheaded practice development, including analytical methods in scenario planning, strategic choice structuring, and growth strategy. He headed the core skills training programs for consulting practitioners, as well as led classroom-based courses in strategy formulation and writing.

While pioneering a Tokyo-based industrial and product design studio, Mike served as the chair of the Committee on New Media for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (1994-1996). At ACCJ, he advised member organizations and on emerging technologies and trade policy, specifically in high-performance computing, encryption, communications, and the Internet.

Mike has a BS from MSU in sociology, concentrating on organizational dynamics in business. As a life-long learner, he has a certificate from IDEO for Storytelling for Influence and undertook Ideas to Action and Insights for Innovation. While sponsored by IBM, Mike completed advanced executive programs at the Harvard Business School.
