Vijey Scholarship
Announcing 2021 Vijey Kumar Scholarships!
PMI-LA Chapter announces the recipients of the Vijey Kumar Scholarships at the Flagship Virtual Dinner Meeting.
Congratulations to our award winners – Richard Martinson, Karthik Gurumurthy, and Ruth Joya!
PMI-LA Chapter established the Vijey Kumar scholarship fund in 2016 to recognize continuing member and volunteer commitment to the chapter, and to encourage our members to improve their lives professionally through project management education or certification.
Vijey Kumar
For those of you that did not know Vijey, he was a construction project manager. He joined PMI and the LA Chapter in 1990. He volunteered on the Board as VP of Professional Development for 2 years, then VP of Finance for 5 years (and helped the Chapter through a difficult time). He moved away from the Los Angeles area, but returned in 2012 and took up his position as VP of Finance again. Until he stepped down, due to ill health in 2013, and passed away in 2014.
Vijey was an enthusiastic member of the Chapter. He always gave everyone a very warm welcome at the registration desk in Culver City. And he showed dedication, honesty and the highest of ethics in everything he did. Vijey really embodied the spirit of volunteerism, and that is why the Scholarship Fund is dedicated in his name.
And now a little bit more about our scholarship recipients….
Richard Martinson
Richard volunteers for the LA Chapter and is currently our Associate VP for the Technology Team.
His scholarship is going towards the Certified Scrum Product Owner course.
“Wow thank you so much!!! This is amazing!! I'm so honored! This scholarship will help me tremendously.”
Richard wants to hone his agile skills and become certified in agile methodologies, as well as waterfall.
He volunteers because of the value the chapter brings to the professional PM community in the LA area. And he has learned so much under the leadership of his VP (Syreeta) that he wouldn’t have learned anywhere else.
Karthik Gurumurthy
Karthik’s scholarship is going towards the Certified Scrum Product Owner course.
“I am very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected as the recipient of your scholarship. By awarding me the Vijey Kumar scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden, which allows me to focus more on updating my knowledge base and sharing the same with the community. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community.”
Karthik is currently helping a couple of seasoned project managers in their ACP and PMP certifications and would love to help more people improve their knowledge and skills so that we all as a community can move forward and take it to the next level. He has helped hundreds of students across the world helping them shape their careers – it has given him enormous satisfaction to have a small role helping young people with different opportunities and taking them to the next level.
Ruth Joya
Ruth’s scholarship is going towards books for a module in the Master of Science in Project Management program.
“Thank you so much for this wonderful news and for the virtual dinner invitation.”
Ruth is moving into the project management field and will apply PM principles and methodologies to help her grow as an experienced project manager to successfully manage future projects.
And finally, the Scholarship Committee (Kay, Ida, and Keith) would like to thank the PMI-LA Board of Directors for continuing their support of this annual program, and thanks to all our members who submitted an application. We hope this program runs again next year!
